چکیده

The Sun’s magnetic cycle manifests itself in an year periodic variation in the number of sunspots seen on the solar surface and a periodic reversal in the polarity of its large-scale magnetic fields. Exploring the origins of this magnetic cycle can unravel the physical mechanisms at work in the interior of magnetized stars like the Sun. Such studies are also important for understanding how the Sun’s magnetic output shapes the near-Earth Space environment. Over half a Century of research suggests that a magnetohydrodynamic dynamo mechanism produces the magnetic activity that we see in Sun-like stars. In this review, following a summary of solar observations and the main aspects of the dynamo mechanism, I shall go on to discuss recent theoretical and observational developments, which provide evidence that a meridional flow of material in the interior of the Sun and the interaction of this flow with magnetic fields, is primarily responsible for controlling the period and perhaps also the strength of the solar magnetic cycle.

Exploring the Physical Basis of Solar Cycle Predictions: Flux Transport Dynamics and Persistence of Memory in Advection versus Diffusion Dominated Solar Convection Zones

The predictability, or lack thereof, of the solar cycle is governed by numerous separate physical processes that act in unison in the interior of the Sun. Magnetic flux transport and the finite time delay it introduces, specifically in the so-called Babcock-Leighton models of the solar cycle with spatially segregated source regions for the α and Ω-effects, play a crucial rule in this predictabi...

On the role of meridional flows in flux transport dynamo models

Context. The Sun is a magnetic star whose magnetism and cyclic activity is linked to the existence of an internal dynamo. Aims. We aim to understand the establishment of the solar magnetic 22-yr cycle, its associated butterfly diagram and field parity selection through numerical simulations of the solar global dynamo. Inspired by recent observations and 3D simulations that both exhibit multicel...

A numerical MHD model for the solar tachocline with meridional flow

There are successful approaches to explain the formation of the tachocline by a poloidal magnetic field in the solar core. We present here the first MHD simulations of the solar tachocline which self-consistently include the meridional circulation. We show that the meridional flow significantly changes the shape and the characteristics of the tachocline. We find that after the inclusion of the ...

On the role of asymmetries in the reversal of the solar magnetic field

We study how the solar magnetic field evolves from antisymmetric (dipolar) to symmetric (quadrupolar) state during the course of its 11-yr cycle. We show that based on equatorial symmetries of the induction equation, flux transport solar mean field dynamo models excite mostly the antisymmetric (dipolar) family whereas a decomposition of the solar magnetic field data reveals that both families s...

MHD theory of the solar tachocline with meridional flow

It has been shown that the best explanation for the formation of the tachocline is that of magnetic nature. We present here the first simulations of the solar tachocline, which self-consistently include the meridional circulation. We show that the meridional circulations significantly change the shape and the characteristics of the tachocline. We find that after the inclusion of the meridional ...
